Memories of My Father

This is my gentle reminder to you.
Honor your father with your memories.

Think back to the good times.

September will be 4 years since my dad passed.
I still want to pick up the phone and talk to him.

My dad was a man of few words.
I’d dial his number and I’d spend the time chatting with my step mom.
He’d get on the phone for only a few minutes and that would be that.

But the impact my dad had on my life went deep.
I didn’t really see it until I looked back to remember the things we did together.

Memories of My Father

My dad and I shared a soul-level connection with dogs,
the feeling of being at home in the woods,
care for the environment,
and a commitment to help others in need.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
I’m thinking of you and remembering the things we did together.

Memories of My Father

That bridge we built together for my 6th grade science project.
You drove me to the bridge we used as a model for the project, explained its design, and back home in the garage we  re-created it piece by piece.

You taught me how to plan and execute.
My dad knew how to get the job done.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
I’m thinking of you and remembering the things we did together.

Memories of My Father

You taught me to downhill ski at the age of four.
Snowplowing and traversing across the slope relentlessly until it finally clicked in my body and I found myself skiing straight down the mountain.

You introduced me to perseverance and fearlessness.
My dad had a strong desire to learn – and to have fun.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
I’m thinking of you and remembering the things we did together.

Memories of My Father

Whenever I’d visit you’d invite me into your shop to be with you to change the oil in my car and check everything over.
My dad’s actions always spoke louder than his words.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
I’m thinking of you and remembering the things we did together.

Memories of My Father

In your later years we’d sit on the couch and watch TV.
My dad knew that being together was what mattered most.

And it was perfect.
Who needs words when the heart speaks so clearly?

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
I’m thinking of you and remembering the things we did together.

Thank you.

Today is the day.
Go out and practice.
Think back to the good times.

Honor your father with your memories.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
I’m thinking of you and remembering the things we did together.

Here are 5 easy suggestions:
1. Get enough sleep. Establish a bedtime routine and follow it.

2. Get outside every day. Rain or shine. Take a walk.
3. Appreciate what is wonderful in the world. Write 3 things you are grateful for every day.
4. Get a buddy. Call them every day. Ask how they are and what they are feeling. Ask them if they need anything.
5. Give yourself a pleasure treat. Pick yourself some flowers. Take a nap. Read a novel. Do anything you want – just for the fun of it.

With all my love.
From my heart to yours.
Gail
