3 Things to Give Up If You Want a Fun & Playful Marriage

This is my gentle reminder to you.
Bring curiosity, humor, and play to your marriage.

Be willing to give up blame, self-righteousness, and negativity.

1. Give up blaming & criticizing yourself

You are human.
There will be times that you find yourself in spin or doubt or just plain old stuck.
Show yourself some love.
Accept and allow.
Be patient.
Give yourself some time and the funk will pass.

Approaching yourself with compassionate curiosity will help.
Be easy on yourself as you learn to become a kinder partner.

2. Give up making your partner wrong

The cost of being right is too high.
Making your partner wrong sucks the fun and play right out of a relationship.
Be willing to let things go – even when you are right.
Especially when you are right.
Find the humor in the situation and laugh out loud.
Choose to love the differences you find in your spouse.

Bring acceptance and curiosity to the big stuff – what your partner believes – and to the small stuff – how your partner folds towels or puts the dishes away.

This is what partnership is made up of.
Navigating the differences with grace.
Remind yourself often that you’re on the same team.

3. Give up entertaining negative thoughts about your marriage

This will never work.
I know we’ll eventually divorce.
The institution of marriage is outdated.
My mother was right.
I’ll never be happy and free.

IF you’ve made the decision to commit to your relationship at this time, then you must be all in.
There is no positive outcome from entertaining negative thoughts and doubts about your marriage.
So just don’t.

Be all in.
Regardless of what form your relationship takes.

Positive thoughts to consider:

  • We will figure this out.
  • This will pass.
  • There’s a lesson here to learn.
  • I’m willing to do the spiritual work that’s required to show up with love for my partner.

Your relationship is an opportunity to grow and evolve.

Do your best to learn about yourself with every disagreement and every time you find yourself down the rabbit hole of fear, resistance, or anger.

Go out and practice.
Be willing to give up blame, self-righteousness, and negativity.

Bring curiosity, humor, and play to your relationship.

Most important. Take care of you.

Here are 5 easy suggestions:
1. Get enough sleep. Establish a bedtime routine and follow it.

2. Get outside in nature every day. Rain or shine.
3. Appreciate what is wonderful in the world. Write 3-5 things you are grateful for each day.
4. Reach out to a sister. Call her once a week – or every day. Ask how she is and what she is feeling. Give her the space to release her feelings without any judgment or fixing.
5. Treat yourself to pleasure. Dance. Take a nap. Sing out loud. Read a novel. Soak in the tub. Do anything you want – just for the pleasure of it.

With all my love.
From my heart to yours.
Gail
