Don’t Do It Alone – You Need People to Heal

This is my gentle reminder to you.
Don’t do it alone.

You need people to heal your hurts.

This was a very hard lesson for me to learn.
It used to be me against the world.

Well.. me and a gallon of cookie dough ice cream against the world.
Me & my ice cream.
We’ve got this.

Until I realized that the ice cream had me.
And I needed help.

I was fortunate to have a therapist who pointed me in the direction of 12 step programs.
When I walked into the rooms and heard the other men and women sharing their stories, my jaw dropped open.
They were sharing my story, my struggle.

OMG.
Their stories were even worse than my mine.
How could that be?
I thought I was the only one.
I thought I was alone in this.

That was almost 3 decades ago.

I shared my secret life of binge eating with others that knew all about it — only too well.

I learned that I wasn’t meant to heal my hurt places on my own.
A community of like minded people was called for.

A community of people ready to upgrade their lives from being alone with their shameful secrets,
to being in communication with others – and telling the truth.
Cheering each other on to our big & bold life dreams.

I found people to climb mountains with.
To bike with.
And to swim across lakes with.

To rage and cry with too.

We are not meant to do this alone.
Surround yourself with people that juice you up.

Your dreams are way better than over-eating, over-working, over-spending and over-doing.
Give yourself a fighting chance to upgrade your life “beyond your wildest dreams”.

“Don’t Do It Alone” is a key module in my Big & Bold program to help women stop “over-ing”
(Over-eating.
Over-working.
Over-spending.
Over-doing)

Why?

Because we need the mirror that others can be for us. In all sorts of ways.

For inspiration. Their wins are our wins.
For self compassion. Their struggles are our struggles.
For connection. Their stories are our stories.

All this “over-ing” behavior is an attempt to fill a bottomless pit – an emptiness – that cannot be filled with food, work, spending or doing. Together – in community – we can feel all the feelings – and be just fine.

When we have a practice of connecting with others and sharing our deepest desires – and the places we hurt – we no longer need to fill ourselves with over-eating, over-working, over-spending and over-doing.

We actually get to LIVE our dreams.

Don’t do it alone.

Here are 5 easy suggestions:
1. Get enough sleep. Establish a bedtime routine and follow it. 

2. Get outside every day. Rain or shine. Take a walk.
3. Appreciate what is wonderful in the world. Write 3 things you are grateful for every day. 
4. Get a buddy. Call them every day. Ask how they are and what they are feeling. Ask them if they need anything.
5. Give yourself a pleasure treat. Pick yourself some flowers. Take a nap. Read a novel. Do anything you want – just for the fun of it.
